How to buy a car as an expat in Switzerland

Choice of the car

The choice of the car is very important in regards to the value of the car when you leave Switzerland. In our experience since 2002 we have learned that you can save the most of the money if you buy a car that has a strong demand in the market now and in the near future, this is the moment where you can easily lose a couple of thousands of Swiss Francs.

Online platforms

The leader in the market is clearly www.autoscout24.ch. You find the most of the car online there, be it new or used. There are some pitfall to be aware of: the indicated equipment can be false, so you should stick to an expert that can help you analyses the different offers and make some verification be it in term of equipment or new price if you are not able to do it on your own.

Cars that you find on stock

At first glance they seem interesting, you might get a price that appears to be low, or the dealer offers a very low interest on leasing and more. This means that the dealer needs to get rid of the cars. Why in most cases as the car do not sell and have been on stock for a long time (do not hesitate to ask). The point is, if the car does not sell easily now, how do you imagine it will sell once you want to get rid of the car?

Does the Dealer also help you resell the car?

Before you sign the contract, ask whether there is only an interest to sell the car or whether the dealer is also happy to help you with a trade in or consignment sales once you leave the country and without buying another car.. In our experience, more than 80% only sell cars, once you have to get rid of it, they will not help.

New versus slightly used cars

The higher the list price of the car, the more you can save if you take a car that has up to max 2 years and 30’000km. There is a market 10x bigger than Switzerland just next to us: Germany, where there are a lot of very young cars, be it so called Jahreswagen from Brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW that were used during 12 months or similar by their employees, or other young cars. There is a huge probability that we can find your dream car there.

New cars: Are the prices high in Switzerland? Direct imports versus domestic cars

The prices for new cars in Switzerland were very stable until 2011, where the Euro-crisis was on its high, and the Euro crashed down in value against the Swiss Francs. That was the starting point where the official importer started to give Euro Bonuses or decrease their list price. The second wave came in early 2015 when the Swiss National Bank abandoned the 1.20 Mark against the Euro.

Once cannot generalize, the best is, once you found out which car suits you best, to check the prices in Switzerland and abroad. The more the car is expensive, the more you can save when importing a car.

Key in hand delivery

Last but not least, find out whether your car dealer has experience with registering cars for freshly arrived residents. Can he register a car without the permit that maybe takes weeks to months to get down. Can he help you with an insurance partner, as you cannot register the car without having an insurance.

History of the car

Make sure you know more about the former life of the car you want to buy, was it an ex-rental car? A lot of Audi’s, VW’s, Seat’s and Skodas with 30’000km, 1-2 years young are ex rental cars. Was the car always fully serviced, did it have accidents? Is the car expertised (vorgeführt in German and expertise in French)?
